Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia explored cooperation to promote the energy transition with European Union Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, in keeping with the archipelagic nation's mission as one of the chairs of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action.

According to a statement received from the Finance Ministry here on Monday, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati met with Hoekstra in Washington D.C., the United States.

"Climate change mitigation issues, including the transition to renewable energy, are still hot topics. The topics of energy transition, climate change, and carbon trading filled our discussion space," she informed in the statement.

She also expressed her appreciation to the European Union (EU) for providing financial support to Indonesia's Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

She said that several priority projects have been prepared under JETP, for instance, the construction of an electricity transmission and distribution network as well as solar panels and hydroelectric, geothermal, bioenergy, and wind power plants.

"We also exchanged ideas on various collaboration opportunities in carbon trading. Indonesia has great potential as a global carbon credit supplier of up to 1.3 gigatons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emission reduction with an estimated value of US$190 billion," she informed.

Indrawati said she hopes that the European Union's support in the form of investment would help Indonesia script a faster, more just, and more affordable energy transition.

She was in Washington D.C. to attend the World Bank-IMF Spring Meeting.

During the meeting series, she explored investment potential from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for green and sustainable financing in Indonesia.

EIB, as the EU's financial institution, expressed interest in exploring collaboration with the Indonesian government.

A number of pipeline projects were also initiated, such as the construction of public transportation, urban development projects, and the improvement of health facilities.
