Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has urged tourists to prioritize aspects of decarbonization and sustainability while traveling.

"On Earth Day, tourism can be made more sustainable by prioritizing aspects of decarbonization, reducing carbon emissions by joining mangrove and coral reef planting activities," he said at a weekly press conference here on Monday.

He said that tourists can practice sustainable waste handling and reduce food loss and waste.

In commemoration of the 2024 Earth Day, Uno also called for the promotion of electric vehicles as a mode of transportation for travel as part of efforts to realize carbon-free tourism.

Meanwhile, his ministry also conveyed its programs to support Earth protection at the UN General Assembly Sustainability Week in New York some time ago.

The concrete efforts carried out so far have included offsetting carbon emissions, planting mangrove forests in several tourist destinations, restoring coral reefs, and handling food waste issues.

In addition, there is also the tourism village program that empowers local communities by applying local wisdom and customs.

The village program shows that tourism is a sector that has very broad opportunities for creating quality jobs.

Minister Uno expressed his intention to present Indonesian destinations as close to nature, culture, and full of adventure.

So, they are not only destinations that focus on sunlight, sea, and beaches, but can also attract tourists based on tranquility, spirituality, and sustainability.

In addition to Bali and the five super-priority tourism destinations, there is also the new capital IKN Nusantara, which is expected to emerge as a new tourist destination.

The development of IKN Nusantara is prioritizing interconnectivity based on nature sustainability, for example, through the use of connectivity infrastructure that does not use fossil energy but connects economic centers in Kalimantan.
