Jakarta (ANTARA) - Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Minister Abdul Halim Iskandar has invited all parties to build partnerships with villages to face climate change, which is multidimensional in nature.

He extended the invitation at the "Forum of Social Dimension of Climate Change" organized by his ministry in collaboration with the World Bank in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Iskandar, the issue of tackling the negative impacts of climate change is not only related to efforts to build environmental resilience.

Building social resilience — the ability of society to adapt to the threat of climate change-related damage — is another way to handle the negative impacts of climate change, he pointed out.

The minister noted that the Village Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have the role of encouraging villages in the country to be responsive in facing all problems related to climate change.

Through Village SDGs, he said, his ministry has created detailed target policies and key indicators for villages when it comes to facing climate change.

There are 18 goals of Village SDGs that cover aspects of citizenship, village territory, and institutions.

The 18 goals include building villages without poverty, villages without hunger, and healthy and prosperous villages; providing quality village education; and encouraging the involvement of village women.

The Village SDGs also aim to create villages with clean water and adequate sanitation and villages with clean and renewable energy; ensure equitable village economic growth, village infrastructure, and innovation, according to needs; and build villages without gaps and villages that are responsive to climate change.

Speaking at the forum, he also underscored the need for all stakeholders to continue to take into account the cultural roots of developing villages across Indonesia.
He cautioned that the neglect of cultural roots could result in the loss of local languages and traditions.
