"We should be thankful because (the growth) is bolstered not only by consumption, but also by investments that continue flowing into our country".
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Tuesday said that the national economic growth figure for the first quarter (Q1) of 2024 which stood at 5.11-percent year-on-year has instilled optimism amid a global recession and economic uncertainty.

"Yes, it instills optimism because other countries, especially major economies, have one by one begun to experience a recession, while other countries have reported a decline in their economic growth. However, Indonesia's economy has continued to rise by 5.11 percent (year-on-year)," he expounded.

Speaking after inaugurating Indonesia Digital Testing House at the Telecommunication Device Testing Center (BBPPT) in Depok, West Java, the President noted that the economic growth was bolstered by high consumption and investment.

Hence, everyone should be grateful for Indonesia's continued positive economic performance, he said.

"We should be thankful because (the growth) is bolstered not only by consumption, but also by investments that continue flowing into our country," Widodo added.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) earlier informed that Indonesia's economic growth in Q1 stood at 5.11 percent year-on-year, the highest level since 2015.

Responding to the national economic growth data reported by BPS, Deputy Minister of Finance, Suahasil Nazara, said that it will provide a good basis for future economic expansion.

"Growth of 5.11 percent is quite a high figure, and it is a good basis for Indonesia's growth in 2024," he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

Nazara said that based on the current figure, the government wants economic growth in the next quarter to be even higher.

"We will see in the second, third, (and) fourth quarters. But the government's incentives continue. Hopefully, this can continue to encourage investment in the coming quarters. So this is a good base, but we want to go even higher," the deputy minister added.
