"The government should immediately collect, analyze, and publish statistical data on femicide as an implementation of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) recommendation," Komnas Perempuan member Retty Ratnawati said here on Sunday.
She said that the establishment of a femicide watch is based on the CEDAW's general recommendations Number 35 and 2017.
This is in response to the deaths of women in a number of recent murder cases, she added.
Femicide is the murder of women because of their sex or gender and as a result of the escalation of gender-based violence.
Ratnawati mentioned that there were 95 cases with strong femicide indications in 2020, 237 cases in 2021, 307 cases in 2022, and 159 cases in 2023.
She explained the indicators of femicide cases that developed along with more knowledge about femicide.
"The yearly observation finds that intimate femicide, which is murder committed by husbands, ex-husbands, boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, and cohabitation partners, is the highest type of femicide," she said.
Meanwhile, Komnas Perempuan member Rainy Hutabarat said that in addition to intimate femicide, women's vulnerability to become femicide victims is also experienced by women with disabilities, women sex workers, transwomen, and women with sexual minorities.
"The main difference between femicide and murder is gender-motivated. Generally, femicide is motivated by more than one motive. Among others, the identified motives are jealousy, being offended by their masculinity, refusal to take responsibility, sexual violence, and refusing divorce or breaking up," Hutabarat said.
According to her, these motives illustrate superiority, dominance, hegemony, aggression, and misogyny towards women, as well as the imbalance of power between men and women.
