"I believe that it is critical that we adopt a prudent and responsible approach to utilizing foreign workers by paying attention to the interests of all parties, including local workers, companies, and the nation as a whole," she said on Monday.
She made the statement at the "Regional Workshop on Exchange Policy Information of Mechanisms and Regulations of the Foreign Workers' Arrangement in the Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia," which was followed online from Jakarta.
Fauziyah said that she considers the employment of foreign workers as an integral part of the global economy and noted that by utilizing foreign workers, a country can strengthen its industries, enhance the capacity of its national workforce, and stimulate sustainable economic development.
Thus, policies regulating the use of such workers need to be capable of bringing harmony to the relationship between economic growth and environmental and social sustainability, she added.
According to Fauziyah, collaboration between the government and all relevant parties is important to reach that end. She also pointed to the need to ensure proper protection of the rights and welfare of workers.
"We all need to be committed to maintaining high-level standards in order to protect workers, create a good and fair employment atmosphere, and provide workers with adequate opportunities to boost their careers," she said.
She also encouraged the establishment of stronger partnerships among foreign worker-employing companies and the creation of a more solid platform that can accommodate the exchange of information and innovation between the companies and other stakeholders.
