Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture has teamed up with the British Council to train teachers to teach English to elementary students.

Sotya Mayangwuri, Supervisor of the PKB and Character Strengthening Program of the Directorate of Primary Education Teachers, Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel of the Ministry of Education and Culture, said that the ministry seeks a program with a proper module for teachers to teach enjoyable English in elementary schools.

"We need a lot of support, especially from the British Council, for this program," she said on Tuesday.

She said that the aim of introducing English from an early age is in keeping with a ministerial regulation that requires English to be re-established as a mandatory subject at the elementary school level.

"We want to introduce English as early as possible to students," Mayangwuri explained.

She expressed hope that after the training organized in collaboration with the British Council, teachers can train students to interact with their peers and follow simple instructions in English.

Meanwhile, British Council Country Director for Indonesia and Southeast Asia, Summer Xia, emphasized the importance of fostering student interest and confidence through English instruction that goes beyond grammar.

"It is important to increase interest and motivate children to be confident in using English, not limited to grammar or pronouncing each word correctly, but using English as a tool to chat with peers and other people in a fun way," he added.

Since February, the British Council has been training 490 teachers, divided into 25 classes and supported by nine moderators. The training program will continue until August.
