Samarinda (ANTARA) - Kutai Kartanegara district government in East Kalimantan is committed to preserving the habitat of endangered snubfin dolphins (Pesut Mahakam), as proven by the issuance of a district's decree regarding conservation of the fish's habitat waters.

"The manifestation of this commitment is the issuance of the Decree of the Head of Kukar (Kutai Kartanegara) District Number 75/2020 concerning the preservation of aquatic conservation areas for Pesut Mahakam's habitat," Kutai Kartanegara District Secretary Sunggono stated in Tenggarong on Thursday.

Another commitment was made through the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Directorate General of Marine and Marine Space Management of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) regarding conservation area management in the Mahakam waters in the upstream area in Kutai Kartanegara.

Moreover, the signing of the work matrix for the implementation of cooperation was carried out by Head of the Pontianak Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center and Head of the Kutai Kartanegara Fisheries and Maritime Service.

Attendees at the signing of the two collaboration agreements were Kutai Kartanegara District Secretary Sunggono, Head of the Collaboration Section of the Kutai Kartanegara District Secretariat Ismi Nurul Huda, and representatives from the Mulawarman University on Tuesday (May 28).

"This collaboration is carried out as an effort by the regional government to protect several habitats in natural conservation areas, especially Pesut Mahakam," Sunggono stated.

He underscored the need for cooperation with other districts or cities in East Kalimantan to protect areas, so that the pattern of protection and supervision of conservation areas can be synergistic and well-coordinated.

He emphasized that cooperation with other regions needs to be carried out, as this area is not only found in one region, but the Mahakam River conservation area also extends in the middle to upstream parts intersecting with three districts.

The mid-section of Mahakam River enters Kutai Kartanagara District, while the upstream section of the river is located in the districts of West Kutai and Mahakam Ulu.

"Hence, there needs to be cooperation in protecting conservation areas," Sunggono affirmed.
