Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government gained insights on the implementation of eco-friendly port services during the ASEAN Maritime Connectivity Forum held in Penang, Malaysia, on Monday (June 10).

"Here, we take notes from the experiences of Malaysia and (South) Korea in implementing rules and policies related to the environment, as well as the feasibility studies and digitization required for pursuing eco-friendly management of ports," Hartarto, the Transportation Ministry's Sea Transportation Director, stated.

In the ministry's statement cited here on Wednesday (June 12), Hartarto noted that the forum was organized by Australia's Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) and drew participation from representatives of South Korea and Australia, in addition to ASEAN member states.

Apart from the Transportation Ministry, the Indonesian delegation also comprised officials from the National Development Planning Ministry and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

He revealed that the topics discussed during the international forum included the Green Shipping and Supply Chain Management program and the integration of digital applications related to port services.

"The meeting convened (to discuss) the importance of forging synergy among ASEAN states and partners in achieving targets put forward in the greenhouse gas reduction strategy of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)," he stated.

The official then drew attention to the obstacles being faced in the implementation of green shipping, pointing to the relatively high budget required and difficulties in identifying suitable markets.

Speaking about the challenges faced by ASEAN countries in their efforts to digitize port services, Hartarto drew attention to limited budgets, a lack of a competent workforce, the integration of new systems and technology, and the implementation of a port community system.

"We need to formulate a national regulation framework and a road map for the implementation of a green shipping corridor, carry out the automation and integration of digital port services, and pursue autonomous shipping by involving stakeholders in the maritime cluster," he concluded.
