Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stressed that the 21st National Sports Week (PON) and the 17th National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) scheduled this year must be held on time and must not be postponed. This was conveyed by Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo here on Thursday after attending a limited meeting on the readiness of preparations for the 2024 PON and Peparnas.

The limited meeting was led by President Widodo and was attended by relevant ministers and regional heads.

"Here who are present are Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, the acting governor of Aceh, and the acting governor of North Sumatra," Ariotedjo said.

According to him, the President has directed that the implementation of the PON and Peparnas this year be on time with no postponements.

The minister's statement reassured the public and athletes that the PON in Aceh and North Sumatra will take place on schedule from September 8–20, 2024, while Peparnas in Surakarta, Central Java, will be held from October 6–13.

Rumors of the postponement of PON and Peparnas had emerged since the two national-level sports events are only a month apart from the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections (Pilkada) on November 27.

The government is also targeting to complete the construction and renovation of sports venues in Aceh and North Sumatra by the end of July.

During the limited meeting, President Widodo asked ministers and regional heads to ensure that the venues for the 21st PON in Aceh and North Sumatra are ready on time.

"Our concern right now is how to ensure that the venues in Aceh, North Sumatra are all completed on time and meet the required standards," he said.
