"In 2023, there were 270 thousand internship placements abroad, which means that the contribution of overseas placements is quite high," she informed during a public education activity on internships abroad and the soft launch of a vocational high school here on Saturday.
According to her, her side is following up on the Job Creation Law by creating more jobs and attracting new investment, both from within and outside the country.
"We are currently getting an overflow of productive age population, while there are many countries that are experiencing labor shortages," she said.
She added that some of the countries that are experiencing labor shortages include Japan, South Korea, and some countries in Europe.
"While in Indonesia there is an abundance of productive age population, but on the other hand, there are many countries that are needing more workers, which means that the job market is not only in the country but also abroad," she pointed out.
Thus, many companies in the world still lack skilled experts, she noted.
Meanwhile, she said that new investments are flowing into Indonesia as the government is bolstering the downstreaming program.
"This requires a large amount of workforce and a lot of experts every year," she pointed out.
There are some challenges, for instance, in terms of the output of vocational education institutes, or perhaps the skills learned do not answer the needs of the job market, she added.
"According to data, vocational school graduates contribute 18 percent to the open unemployment rate. This means that the workforce's skills and competencies are not in accordance with the job market demand," she said.
