Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has confirmed that Shin Tae-yong will continue to coach the national football team or the "Garuda squad" until 2027.

The agreement to extend Shin's contract by three years will enable him to continue his commitment to supporting national football development, according to a statement released by the PSSI here on Friday.

"Moreover, Shin Tae-yong has delivered the national team to the third stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification and the 2024 Olympics play-off stage. His performance benefitted Indonesia's football," PSSI chairperson Erick Thohir said.

The extension of Shin's contract reflects PSSI's commitment to enhancing Indonesia's football quality and achievements at the global level, he added.

The continued collaboration between PSSI, coach Shin, and all stakeholders in the national football team is also expected to deliver other victories for Indonesia.

Shin was selected to replace Scotland's Simon McMenemy as coach of the national football team on December 28, 2019. He signed a four-year contract with Indonesia.

The South Korean coach then initiated a regeneration of the "Garuda squad," and as a result, the average age of athletes on the national team is currently 24.

Shin successfully guided the national team to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup after a 16-year absence and brought them to the round of 16.

Now that his contract has been extended, Shin's next job is to prepare the national team for the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification in the Asian zone.

Indonesia has been placed in Group C with Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China.
