Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Election Ethics Council has recommended the permanent dismissal of General Elections Commission (KPU) head Hasyim Asy'ari after finding him guilty of ethics violations.

The council, which held an ethics hearing in Jakarta on Wednesday, found him guilty of having breached the code of ethics in an immoral act-related case.

Following the decision, head of the Elections Organization Ethics Council (DKPP), Heddy Lugito, said that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will have to replace Asy'ari within seven days since the DKPP has reached its decision.

The DKPP has asked the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) to monitor the implementation of its decision.

The ethics hearing was held offline and online by the DKPP in response to complaints of alleged breach of ethics by Asy'ari, filed by two institutions on April 18, 2024.

The institutions were the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Law's Legal Aid Consultation Foundation and Option of Dispute Resolution (LKBH-PPS FH UI) and the Legal Aid Foundation of the Indonesian Women's Association of Justice (LBH APIK).

Asy'ari attended the hearing via video conferencing platform Zoom.

Born in Pati, Central Java, on March 3, 1973, Asy'ari was made the KPU commissioner on August 29, 2016, and the head of the commission on April 12, 2022.

He obtained his PhD in sociology and politics from the University of Malaya, Malaysia, and worked as a lecturer at the University of Diponegoro in Semarang, Central Java. (INE)
