Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin emphasized the importance of developing new and renewable energy technologies to address climate change and environmental degradation.

During the summit of World Environment Day 2024 in Jakarta on Friday, he encouraged research and development efforts aimed at innovative technologies capable of restoring degraded land and anticipating climate change impacts.

"We must advance renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and hydropower, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels that cause greenhouse gas emissions," he said in a video on the VP Secretariat's YouTube channel.

Amin deemed it necessary to build an eco-friendly transportation ecosystem, such as electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, and mass transit systems, as effective ways to minimize carbon emissions.

He called on all stakeholders to share equal responsibility in addressing climate change, considering the historical accountability, vulnerability levels, and capacities of each party.

"There needs to be special funding to address climate change and technology transfer from high-emission countries to affected nations as part of global responsibility," he remarked.

Amin also stressed that climate change policies should prioritize the needs and vulnerabilities of marginalized communities.

He also underscored the importance of robust land and forest governance.

"Increase supervision on activities that can exacerbate land degradation and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations," he pointed out.

Amin called for integrating land restoration strategies into national development policies.

He stated that the world faces three global crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Greenhouse gas emissions contribute to rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and sea level rise.

"This condition leads to biodiversity loss as species struggle to adapt to extreme environmental changes," he said.
