Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Narcotics Board (BNN) and the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) are cooperating to bolster surveillance in Indonesian waters against drug syndicates.

BNN Head Com. Gen. Marthinus Hukom stated at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bakamla on Wednesday that narcotics-related threats have continued to evolve with the modi operandi that are becoming increasingly complex and advanced.

"Based on the BNN mapping, 90 percent of the smuggling of narcotics in Indonesia is done via sea," he noted in a BNN statement on Thursday.

Hukom assessed that the MoU signing with Bakamla, as the maritime authority, is a strategic measure to respond to the challenges of drug crimes that often take advantage of the opportunities arising from Indonesia's geographical conditions as a maritime country.

He expressed optimism that cooperation between the BNN and Bakamla would foster trust and uphold morality and law, leading to an optimal collaboration.

He also expects follow-up action, such as a more technical cooperation agreement, following the signing of the MoU.

"If possible, we could form task forces in regions that are very prone so that we can see the problem of narcotics in the sea more concretely," he remarked.

On the same occasion, Bakamla Head Navy Vice Admiral Irvansyah also expressed his keenness for stronger technical cooperation so that the nation can reap the benefits.

"The Bakamla and BNN cooperation frameworks must continue to be improved and developed jointly in various forms and methods so that they can really impact this nation," he stated.

Both Irvansyah and Hukom expressed optimism that the signed MoU would be implemented in harmony to positively impact the Indonesian nation's future and realize a safe Indonesia and drug-free generations.
