"There are several international parties that contacted us to participate in the EV business in Indonesia, among others, (those from) Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China," the ministry's director for industry resources and international promotion access, Syahroni Ahmad, said here on Friday.
According to him, the government is actively promoting EV investment opportunities in Indonesia, especially after the US increased the tariffs on EVs from China to 100 percent and Europe increased tariffs on Chinese EVs to up to 37 percent.
As the main producer of EVs, China is planning to produce EVs in other countries, including Turkey and Indonesia. Several Chinese companies are also running their business in Indonesia.
"China wants to directly produce electric cars and electric motorcycles (in Indonesia)," he informed.
He said that the ministry carried out a survey with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on EV batteries, especially for two-wheeled vehicles, so that they can be recycled.
"However, it is only a survey with Japan and it has not decided which companies will enter (Indonesia)," he added.
As for South Korea, Busan Techno Park is interested in building a center for verification and checking in Indonesia.
Furthermore, with Taiwan, Indonesia is playing a role in the global value chain (GVC).
"A factory (of a Taiwanese company) has been built in an industrial area in Batam. Hopefully, in September (2024), it can start production, and the Industry Minister will be invited to the launch in August," Ahmad said.
The factory in Batam would recycle batteries by taking the cobalt, lithium, and nickel to be sold to electric battery companies.
"Indeed, for EVs, we (Indonesia) have a role, especially for electric vehicle batteries," he said.
