Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) has announced that the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) digital payment system will be made available in more countries.

Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta informed that the central bank will sign agreements for the cross-border use of QRIS with South Korea, India, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"Just wait. Indonesians will soon be able to buy topokki or sushi using QRIS," she said during a press conference following a meeting of BI's board of governors on Wednesday.

Indonesia has already established agreements on QRIS usage with Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

An upward trend has been recorded in the average QRIS monthly transactions by visitors from Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore in Indonesia (inbound transactions), and by Indonesians in the three countries (outbound transactions).

Inbound transactions by visitors from Thailand have increased 13 percent, Singapore 28 percent, and Malaysia 8 percent. Meanwhile, outbound transactions by Indonesian tourists in Thailand have increased by 9 percent, in Malaysia by 4 percent, and in Singapore, they have fallen 12 percent.

Domestically, QRIS adoption has continued to soar. Over the past 12 months, QRIS transactions have surged by 226.54 percent. The system now boasts 50.50 million users, and 32.71 million merchants are part of its network.

QRIS was launched on August 17, 2019, coinciding with Indonesia's Independence Day. The launch of the system was aimed at simplifying and securing cashless payments throughout the country.
