"QRIS can have an impact on the economy through an increase in foreign tourist visits to Indonesia," Manilet told ANTARA here on Friday.
He explained that foreign tourists from countries that adopt the QRIS system can easily shop or conduct transactions in Indonesia without the need to harbor concerns about not having sufficient cash.
Foreign tourists also need not worry about being deceived by fraudulent sellers, because in general, those who use QRIS services are trusted merchants.
"The experience gained by foreign tourists is one of the benefits of QRIS cooperation between Indonesia and various countries," he affirmed.
Manilet stated that the use of the cross-border QRIS payment system will boost the tourism sector in the long term if done consistently and followed by improvements in the tourism ecosystem.
In addition, QRIS cross-border transactions between Indonesia and Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore will be able to facilitate efficient trade between countries, especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and to encourage tourism sector growth.
Earlier, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the QRIS will be connected across countries and should be able to facilitate MSMEs and tourism actors.
The QRIS system connects Indonesia with several ASEAN countries. As of August 29, Indonesia and Thailand had fully implemented the cross-border QRIS.
President Jokowi expressed hope that the realization of interconnection using the QRIS would support cost efficiency, so that business actors, especially MSMEs and tourism players, could produce competitive goods in foreign markets.
