Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Police (Polri) have arrested a citizen listed on Interpol’s Red Notice over alleged cross-border online fraud, authorities said, marking an escalation in efforts to combat international cybercrime networks.

The suspect, identified by initials LCS, was detained at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten Province, on Sunday (May 3), according to Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji, the director of cybercrime at the Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) Polri.

The arrest reflected Indonesia’s commitment to tackling transnational cyber offenses, Himawan said in a statement, issued in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"The arrest of suspect LCS is the result of cross-border cooperation and coordination, and demonstrates our seriousness in handling cybercrime, especially online fraud that harms the public," he said.

LCS was previously named a fugitive by the Bareskrim’s cybercrime directorate and had been designated a suspect in a transnational online fraud case linked to an international network operating out of Cambodia.

Authorities said the case involves at least 23 police reports filed from various regions across Indonesia, all of which have been consolidated under the cybercrime unit to streamline investigation and case processing.

Investigators allege LCS acted as an operator in an online fraud scheme using a platform called "abbishopee", which was used to target victims in coordinated scams.

Following his arrest, LCS has been taken into custody and is undergoing further questioning at Bareskrim headquarters in Jakarta, police said.

Himawan added the authorities will continue expanding the investigation to uncover the broader network behind the operation and identify additional suspects.

"We will continue to develop the case to dismantle the international network involved and trace the flow of illicit funds to support recovery of victims’ losses," he said.

Police did not disclose the estimated value of losses or the number of victims involved in the scheme, but said the investigation remains ongoing and may lead to further arrests.
