Malang (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister for Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong has urged the public to help the government script the transition to new and renewable energy by installing more micro hydro power plants (PLTMHs).

He said that his ministry has incorporated the installation and use of PLTMHs into its strategy, which is aimed at making the most of Indonesia's natural resources.

A PLTMH can make use of river water that is traditionally used mainly for irrigating agricultural fields, he added.

"Now, we need to utilize such water as a new source of energy," he said during the graduation ceremony of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), East Java, on Thursday.

Dohong emphasized that PLTMHs can simultaneously generate electricity and optimize irrigation systems since such power plants require water of decent quality and flow to operate.

The presence of a PLTMH can provide people with proof that natural resources can be used to support the energy transition, he added.

In his speech, Dohong commended UMM for offering educational programs that focus on the environment and forestry.

He hailed the programs as a testament to the university's commitment to producing a generation of talents who genuinely care about environmental sustainability and stability.

"Creating young agents of change is a strategic task," he said. "Maintaining environmental stability is a must since an unstable climate might have detrimental impacts on our future generations."

Meanwhile, UMM rector Nazaruddin Malik said that the university has prepared its students and alumni to face various future challenges, including by establishing a Center of Excellence to help them develop their interests and talents.
