Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chair of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) Meutya Hafid believes the government should optimize a socio-cultural approach in dealing with the increasingly violent actions of the Free Papua Organization (OPM).

"The government needs to reopen dialog with the OPM group to find a peaceful solution. Inclusive and transparent negotiations can help reduce tensions," Hafid noted in a statement from her office on Friday.

The House's Commission I chair assessed that investment in infrastructure development, education, and community welfare could help reduce security instability in Papua.

Her side also commended the rapid development carried out by the government in Papua in the last decade.

"Such developments should be continued to support the Papuan people," she emphasized.

Furthermore, Hafid called on the government to focus on resolving the conflict and restoring stability in Papua.

"We are concerned about the recent increased frequency of OPM's incessant acts of violence. We urge the government to immediately take concrete steps and focus on resolving the conflict and restoring security and stability in Papua," she affirmed.

Hafid also called on officers of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri) to overcome security disturbances in Papua since the local community's security was a top priority.

"The presence of security forces should be able to protect civilians to overcome security threats. Strengthening the presence of the TNI and Polri in the area is very important," he noted.

Hafid also criticized OPM's act of torching a school building. She emphasized the need to prioritize the rights of Papuan children to receive a decent education.

"We hope the government can guarantee that children in Papua can receive education comfortably without intimidation and harassment," she stated.

On Tuesday, July 16, the RK 753/AVR Yonif Task Force shot down three members of the OPM Teranus Enumbi group in the Karubate village area, Muara Sub-district, Puncak Jaya District, Papua.

This action by TNI officers triggered a provocation that incited the community, resulting in anarchy in the form of destroying public facilities and setting fire to the cars of TNI-Polri officers.

Puncak Jaya Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Kuswara remarked that the riots resulted in injuries to four people and the death of one resident, identified as Abdulah Jaelani, 30, after being injured by a sharp object.
