"To handle climate change, Bappenas has the mission to integrate policies in national and regional development planning through low-carbon development," the ministry's director of environment, Priyanto Rohmatullah, said here on Tuesday.
At a webinar called "Carbon Trade and Exchange in Indonesia," Rohmatullah explained that environmental issues remain one of the determinants for achieving the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045.
The environmental issues include the "triple planetary crisis" consisting of climate change, pollution, and environmental damage.
Meanwhile, he explained that the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) includes a target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 38 provinces.
Based on that, district/city and provincial governments are expected to contribute to achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Indonesia has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 31.89 percent through its own efforts and 43.20 percent with international support.
Rohmatullah noted that the triple planetary crisis, which is contributing to climate change, is currently affecting various countries.
He said that the Earth's temperature has risen to almost exceed the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius. In Indonesia itself, the temperature has increased by 0.75 degrees Celsius.
Changes in rainfall and rising sea levels have caused coastal flooding, leading to fishermen facing difficulties going to sea, he added.
He said that there are still many challenges to realizing the NZE target. Meanwhile, solutions to these challenges can be implemented starting from the community level.
The simplest step is to change the mindset of the community through circular economy and waste reduction campaigns.
He further said that the media has a strategic role in educating the public about the importance of protecting the environment.
