Jakarta (ANTARA) - Secretary General of the United Development Party (PPP), Arwani Thomafi, lauded the late former vice president of the Republic of Indonesia Hamzah Haz as an inspirational figure.

Haz passed away at 9:30 a.m. local time at his residence in Jakarta on Wednesday. Thomafi confirmed the former VP's death to ANTARA here on Wednesday.

"Yes, Mr. Hamzah Haz has passed away at his residence at 9.30 a.m.," the secretary general remarked.

Haz died at the age of 84. The 9th vice president of Indonesia will be buried at the Cisarua Cemetery Complex, Bogor.

Haz, born on February 15, 1940, in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, was the general chairman of the PPP for two terms from 1998 to 2007.

He then served as the 9th Vice President of Indonesia, accompanying President Megawati Soekarnoputeri from 2001 to 2004.

Haz was earlier active in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and also served as Minister of State for Investment or Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) during President Habibie's administration.

Representing the PPP, Arwani Thomafi expressed his deep condolences over the former VP's demise.

Thomafi stated that Haz had left behind a big legacy for the party with the Kaaba symbol.

The deceased has also set a good example for all party cadres.

"The deceased was the General Chairman of the PPP for two terms (1998-2007) and the 9th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia (2001-2004). A professional politician who protected and inspired all cadres," the secretary general stated.

He said Haz left behind a good example for the party and became a role model for cadres in the party and working in public office.

"Mr. Hamzah is a combination of a politician and a professional figure. He is a legend for the PPP," he stated.
