Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia hailed the signing of the Beijing Declaration by several factions struggling for Palestinian independence as a progressive step in advancing national reconciliation and unity in Palestine.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who is currently in Vientiane, Laos, to attend the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (57th AMM), emphasized the importance of maintaining the unity of the Palestinian nation amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

"Indonesia expects everything agreed to be implemented," she said in a written statement, which was read by spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat here on Wednesday.

Marsudi pointed out that the issue of reconciliation and unity has always been raised by Indonesia in its meetings with Palestinian factions.

"Unity is the key to realizing the peace and the future for Palestine," she said.

At least 14 Palestinian factions agreed to sign the Beijing Declaration to end their split and strengthen Palestinian unity.

The agreement was brokered among the factions, including Fatah and Hamas, following talks in the Chinese capital Beijing on July 21–23, 2024.

According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Palestinian factions agreed to establish an interim national reconciliation government, which will focus on post-war governance in Gaza.

"The key to the internal reconciliation process of the Palestinian factions is to maintain firm confidence, grasp the direction, and proceed step by step," Wang said, according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

"The core outcome is to make clear that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is the sole legitimate representative of all the Palestinian people," he added.

While reconciliation is Palestine's internal matter, it cannot be reached without international support, Wang said. He also affirmed that China stands on the same side as most Arab and Muslim countries on the Palestine issue.

Meanwhile, after signing the agreement, a senior Hamas official, Musa Abu Marzuk, said that the path to completing the journey is national unity.

"We are committed to national unity, and we call for it," he stressed.
