Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian state-owned port company Pelindo is working to support Indonesia's climate change mitigation measures by protecting the blue carbon ecosystem. The support was realized through the signing of a cooperation agreement here on Thursday between Pelindo, the government, companies, and associations on a mangrove rehabilitation program, supported by the corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.

In a statement, the head of Pelindo's CSR Program, Febrianto Zenny Sulistyo, said that Pelindo's is committed to contributing to climate change mitigation and environmental protection, especially measures related to the blue carbon ecosystem.

Mangrove rehabilitation is not only important for absorbing carbon, but also maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems that have a direct impact on coastal communities, he emphasized.

In 2021, Pelindo became the first state-owned enterprise (SOE) to ink a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to mangrove rehabilitation with three ministries.

"Hopefully, this will inspire more parties to participate in the conservation and restoration (of mangroves) for the sake of the blue carbon ecosystem and to support government programs, especially the National Blue Carbon Action Partnership," Sulistyo said.

Indonesia has stated its commitment to supporting the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius by increasing its nationally determined contribution (NDC) target.

In its updated NDC, Indonesia has committed to cut carbon emissions by 31.89 percent through its own efforts and 43.20 percent with international support.

Indonesia has the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world, spanning 3.31 million hectares in area and accounting for about 20 percent of the world's total mangrove area.

In addition, Indonesia's seagrass ecosystems cover around 1.8 million hectares.

Mangroves and seagrasses in Indonesia store 3.14 billion metric tons of carbon, accounting for 17 percent of the carbon stored in the Earth's coastal ecosystems.
