Penajam Paser Utara (ANTARA) - The Balikpapan Bay area is targeted for development as a tourist destination of Nusantara to resemble Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara.

"It is related to the beauty of Balikpapan Bay, so we will see Balikpapan that resembles Labuan Bajo, with many phinisi ships sailing," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi told reporters at the Garuda Palace of Nusantara in East Kalimantan on Monday.

According to Sumadi, Balikpapan Bay has high potential to be developed through the "buy the service" scheme.

Buy the service is a medium-term investment managed by the private sector through a payment scheme from the government.

"We will buy the service as a stimulus. We hope the private sector can do that because I think we must develop a beautiful bay," Budi noted.

He explained that the development of such cooperation will be carried out in collaboration with relevant authorities for coastal management, both from the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry as well as the private sector.

Budi also remarked that beaches around Balikpapan Bay have orangutan and crocodile conservation areas that are attractive as alternative tourism in Indonesia.

"We know that there is orangutan conservation and crocodile breeding area. This is part of a tourism activity, and we will coordinate with the relevant parties (to develop it)," he remarked.
