Nusantara, East Kalimantan (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo promised to empower local entrepreneurs based in the neighboring cities of Nusantara City to fulfil basic needs in the new capital.

East Kalimantan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Head Dayang Donna Faroek made the statement after meeting the president at Nusantara's Garuda Palace on Tuesday.

"Kadin and the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) will be empowered not only as subcontractors but also as key players," she affirmed.

Faroek remarked that Kadin could help the new capital fulfil its food demands by utilizing rice fields in North Penajam Paser District, East Kalimantan. Moreover, the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data indicated that 13 thousand hectares of rice fields, which had been potentially optimized for Nusantara, remain untouched.

"However, it requires collaboration between the Public Works Ministry to develop the irrigation system, the Agriculture Ministry to supply the seeds and fertilizers, and the district authority as the land owner," she emphasized.

During her meeting with the president, Faroek also highlighted the local entrepreneurs' interest in opening new restaurants or cafes in Nusantara.

Faroek remarked that some 4,500 members of East Kalimantan's Kadin would be thankful for the government's assistance in doing business in Nusantara, including on the administration and permit requirements.

Meanwhile, Balikpapan's Kadin Head, Yaser Arafat Syahril, stated that Jokowi is committed to improving spatial planning and addressing traffic congestion issues in Nusantara's satellite regions.

Syahril stated that the president understands the new capital should not give rise to a surge in traffic jams in neighboring regions, such as Balikpapan and North Penajam Paser.

The president stated that the transportation ministry will increase the number of public transport units in Balikpapan, south of Nusantara, to facilitate the residents' mobility and reduce congestion.
