Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry plans to develop a bus rapid transit (BRT) service as a new transportation option in the Bandung Metropolitan Area, West Java, to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

In his office's statement received here on Tuesday, the ministry's Director General of Land Transportation, Risyapudin Nursin, noted that the BRT would cover the regions of Cimahi, West Bandung, and Sumedang.

He remarked that the initial development phase would commence in 2025, with the subsequent two phases scheduled to commence in the following years.

"According to the plan, the bus rapid service will emerge as an eco-friendly option that utilizes low-carbon energy. We will build special lanes and provide schedule certainty to make the travel time of the service shorter," he affirmed.

He stated that the government would offer affordable fares and use a digital information system to attract and facilitate people to use the public transport service.

Nursin further remarked that the design for the buses and supporting infrastructures would conform with the principle of inclusiveness, embracing all people, including those with disabilities.

He stated that the BRT service will be integrated with the Padalarang Fast Train Station, Cimahi Station, Leuwipanjang Bus Terminal, and Tegalluar Fast Train Station.

He affirmed that the Transportation Ministry is committed to providing people with proper mass transportation services in accordance with Law No. 22 of 2009 on traffic and land transport.

To that end, he said the central government requires support and synergy from regional governments, security personnel, and people to facilitate the development of the BRT service, which aims to tackle congestion and curb air pollution.

He also shed light on a plan to develop a similar bus service in Medan City, North Sumatra.
