Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Industry has introduced a campaign for the Indonesia Melangkah program to boost the contribution of small and medium footwear industries (IKM) to the country's foreign exchange reserves.

"We consistently echo the campaign to encourage the spirit of our footwear IKM to help them grow," the ministry's director of multifarious industries and IKM chemical, clothing, and crafts, Alexandra Arri Cahyani, said on Friday.

The campaign seeks to solidify joint efforts and commitment of IKM footwear players to develop the footwear industry and make it more competitive by providing a creative space for designers to develop original footwear designs.

The campaign is expected to support the competitiveness of the footwear industry in Indonesia, which comprises 750 medium and large industries and 60,760 micro and small industries, Cahyani informed.

She said that one of the concrete forms of the program is the Indonesia Footwear Creative Competition (IFCC) and exhibition, organized collaboratively by the Indonesian Footwear Industry Development Center (BPIPI) of the Industry Ministry and Prabu Indonesia footwear brand.

The IFCC is taking place in Jakarta from July 31–August 2, 2024.

She informed that domestic footwear designs have been selected as part of the activity, and they will later be produced by footwear companies on a massive scale.

"The Indonesia Footwear Creative Competition is inspired by the younger generation with all their unique characteristics. We want to provide a free creative space to attract the interest of our younger generation in the footwear industry," she added.

According to the Ministry of Industry, the leather industry, leather goods, footwear, textile industry, and ready-to-wear clothing grew positively in the first quarter of 2024. Consecutively, the growth of the sub-sector reached 5.90 percent annually (year on year).

This increase in performance also improved the contribution of the processing industry to economic growth, which was recorded at 19.28 percent annually, or an increase from the same period in 2023, when it reached 18.57 percent.
