After their meeting at the Army Headquarters here, Simanjuntak highlighted the need to boost border security cooperation with Malaysia to prevent border crimes, such as illegal smuggling or separatist activities.
He said that the cooperation could be materialized through the establishment of joint border security posts and joint patrols by the Indonesian and Malaysian armies.
The Indonesian Army chief also discussed strengthening cooperation in military training, including the continuity of personnel exchange, with his Malaysian counterpart.
"Especially as we have organized a lot of cooperation, for instance, through the Kopassus (Army Special Forces Command) and the Kostrad (Army Strategic Reserve Command), for years," he said.
Simanjuntak expressed the hope that through the meeting, cooperation between the two armies on border security and joint military training would be strengthened.
Meanwhile, General Jantan expressed his enthusiasm over the suggestion to strengthen collaboration with Indonesia in border security and military education.
He said that personnel exchange with Indonesia would help the Malaysian Army improve the competency of its personnel.
"We are keen to prepare aspects related to special professional military development, such as the exchange of personnel and students at Indonesian or Malaysian training centers," the Malaysian Army chief added.
He said he is also confident that bolstering military cooperation would help Malaysia and Indonesia strengthen bilateral relations.
