Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) and the Economic Team of President-elect and Vice President-elect Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka are preparing to establish an agency or organization responsible for controlling climate change and carbon trade.

Head of KSP Moeldoko noted in a KSP statement on Thursday that the Indonesian government under President Joko Widodo has formulated a number of low-carbon policies in the National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

The government also has a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, Moeldoko said.

"In this transitional period, the government hopes that there will be policies that will accelerate the next leadership," he added.

Moeldoko said that the KSP proposed the establishment of a task force to begin discussions on the synchronization and transition of the sustainability of the implementation of carbon control policies.

"My suggestion is to form a task force first in order to formulate the body structurally. This is to facilitate the transition of the formation of the body later," he remarked.

Moeldoko said the task force has functions to prepare Government Regulations related to the formation of the Climate Change Control and Carbon Trade Management Agency (BP3I-TNK) after the inauguration of the President and Vice President for the 2024-2029 period.

Laode Kamaluddin will lead the task force as a member of the Economic Team of President-elect Prabowo Subianto and KSP's senior advisor Ishak Saing.

Moeldoko explained that Indonesia faces financing challenges in order to meet the emission reduction target in 2030.

He noted that the potential for carbon trade in Indonesia is huge, as it has natural wealth.

It includes several tropical forests and marine and coastal biodiversity critical to the blue economy in the form of mangroves and peatlands, which can be a source of carbon absorption and are crucial in overcoming the climate crisis.

"Indonesia can capture the great economic potential of the carbon market and become a major source of state revenue, both through bilateral carbon trading and carbon exchange mechanisms," Moeldoko affirmed.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Economic Team for Prabowo-Gibran, Burhanuddin Abdullah, emphasized that the obligation to fulfill global commitments to reducing carbon emissions aligns with the second pillar of the “8 Missions of the Elected President.”

This pillar aims to promote national independence, particularly through the development of a green economy.

The mission is being implemented through the establishment of BP3I-TNK, which is tasked with directing, managing, and supervising sustainable climate change control, as well as realizing carbon sovereignty by utilizing blockchain technology.

"Hopefully, everyone can participate in coordinating in formulating the agency and revising Presidential Regulation 98 of 2021," Abdullah stated.

Carbon trading in Indonesia is regulated in Presidential Regulation No. 98 of 2021 and Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 21 of 2022.

President Joko Widodo inaugurated carbon trading through the exchange at the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDX Carbon) on September 26, 2023.
