Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights announced on Sunday that Jessica Kumala Wongso, convicted in the Wayan Mirna Salihin murder case, has been released on parole.

"The inmate named Jessica Kumala Wongso received PB (conditional release) based on the Decree of the Minister of Law and Human Rights Number: PAS-1703.PK.05.09 of 2024," the head of the directorate general's public relations, Deddy Eduar Eka Saputra, said in a statement.

This decision aligns with Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation Number 7 of 2022, which outlines the requirements and procedures for granting remission, assimilation, leave to visit family, parole, leave before release, and conditional leave.

As a parolee, Wongso will remain under supervision until March 27, 2032. She has been incarcerated since June 30, 2016, for violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code. The Supreme Court sentenced her to 20 years in prison in June 2017.

Wongso served her sentence at Jakarta's Class IIA Women's Correctional Institution. "While serving her sentence, Wongso has behaved properly based on the prisoner counseling assessment system with a total of 58 months and 30 days of remission," Saputra disclosed.

Wongso was convicted of murdering Wayan Mirna Salihin in January 2016. Mirna died after consuming a poisoned coffee ordered by Wongso at a Jakarta café.

Arrested in January 2016, Wongso was found guilty in October of that year and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Subsequent appeals were rejected.
