At a Second NDC Public Communication event here on Tuesday, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stated that Indonesia will convey an increase in climate action commitment with a no-backsliding principle to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.
The Second NDC document is targeted to be completed before the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan in November 2024
She emphasized that in the Second NDC document, scenarios will be harmonized to curb the temperature increase to not more than 1.5 degrees Celsius to achieve net zero emission by 2060 or sooner.
"The Second NDC will cover a new sector and sub-sector, namely marine and upstream oil and gas, and will detail the Just Transition and adaptation elements," Bakar remarked.
On that occasion, she commended the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) for the initiation of the identification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction through seagrass bed conservation efforts.
For the preparation of the Second NDC document, she noted that joint work and consultation with various stakeholders have been carried out to identify key programs, strategies, mitigation actions, climate change adaptation, and forms of implementation.
At Tuesday's event, Director General of Marine and Marine Space Management at the KKP Ministry, Victor Gustaaf Manoppo, explained that the marine sector in the Second NDC will cover seagrass beds.
The KKP Ministry is currently mapping out the areas of seagrass beds in the country, targeted to be completed this year.
"We are recalculating the seagrass bed GHG inventory using the guidelines agreed at COP28," he explained.
Moreover, the ministry is ensuring the aspect of regulatory certainty, as the regulations will be the legal basis for achieving the targets that will be set in the Second NDC.
He cited that one of the examples of regulations is the Decree of KKP Minister Number 52 of 2024 on the Climate Change Mitigation Road Map.
