Jambi (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has issued a strict warning against climbing Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku. Due to the volcano's ongoing Level II alert status and frequent eruptions, the BNPB is emphasizing the importance of public safety.

Abdul Muhari, head of the BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, informed that the ban is based on recommendations made by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), which has designated a three-kilometer exclusion zone around the mountain's crater.

The warning was reinforced following an incident on Saturday when climbers disregarded the ban and ventured into the danger zone.

Though they had a fortunate escape, the BNPB said it is determined to prevent similar incidents.

The heightened risk at Mount Dukono is on account of the volcano's persistent activity.

A report from the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA) showed 2,387 volcanic earthquakes between August 1 and 15, 2024.

During continuous monitoring on Monday, thick plumes of white and gray smoke were detected billowing from the crater, reaching heights of 100 to 500 meters.
