Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said here on Monday that his side has been carrying out disaster mitigation before granting permits for industrial estate development.

Kartasasmita made the statement during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR), which discussed the protection of industry players against a potential megathrust earthquake.

"We have done mitigation by determining areas — although it is not 100 percent accurate, but we consider these areas to be relatively safe when giving permits for industrial estate development," he said.

According to him, the Industry Ministry has carefully selected areas that can be used as industrial areas.

This has been done to minimize the risks of disasters, such as forest fires, floods, and earthquakes, which have been predicted this year.

"The Industry Ministry is very careful when giving permits for industrial areas. We ensure that the areas are suitable based on the estimates of disaster possibility," Kartasasmita said.

Earlier, the megathrust earthquake became a topic of conversation on social media because it was predicted to shake Indonesia and potentially cause a tsunami.

Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, has asked local governments to prepare a safe spatial arrangement that can accommodate the community as a mitigation effort.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono said that all toll infrastructure and buildings built by his ministry have passed earthquake resistance tests.

"In case of megathrust, toll roads and high-rise buildings we have built in Jakarta must be able to withstand the earthquake up to one thousand years," he said at a working meeting on August 21, 2024.
