Solo (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has taken various measures to deal with the existing housing backlog, including offering the Housing Financing Liquidity Facilities (FLPP) subsidy to people, according to the Public Housing Savings Management Agency (BP Tapera).

Speaking at a talk show held by the Solopos Media Group in Solo, Central Java, on Wednesday (August 28), the agency's Head of the Financing Distribution Division, Alfian Arif, remarked that Indonesia is currently in need of 9.6 million new homes.

He highlighted that the figure is significantly lower than the 12.7 million units recorded five years ago while attributing the decline to the actions taken by BP Tapera in collaboration with several parties.

Arif is upbeat that the optimal implementation of the FLPP subsidy would help Indonesia realize zero housing backlog in 2045, as he believes that the subsidy distribution has been an effective tool for meeting the people's need for homes.

He highlighted that private employees have been dominating the share of FLPP recipients, accounting for 77.29 percent of the total beneficiaries.

He also remarked that the subsidy program is mostly accessed by people in the age bracket of 19 to 30 years, with a wage range of Rp2 million-Rp4 million (US$130-US$260).

The official then noted that for this year, the government has set a quota of 160 thousand units for the FLPP this year, a decline from last year's 220 thousand.

Earlier, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono remarked that the subsidy quota for 2025 would be adjusted to a housing program planned by President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

"To adjust to Mr. Prabowo's plan to aim for (the construction of) three million houses, the quota will definitely be expanded," he remarked after a meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on August 21.
