"I will step down, resign," she said in response to a question during her visit to the Sunan Bungkul Tomb on Thursday.
Rismaharini will pair up with Zahrul Azhar Asumta, also known as Gus Hans, who will contest the deputy governor seat.
She was expected to submit her application to the East Java General Election Commission (KPU) on the evening of August 29, 2024, the last day for regional head election registration.
Rismaharini will hand in her resignation to President Jokowi after completing the registration.
Regarding her resignation plan, Rismaharini noted that she will meet the president on Friday (August 30) and directly convey her intention to resign to focus on contesting the East Java Regional Election.
"If the President has time, I will convey my resignation tomorrow," Rismaharini, who served as the mayor of Surabaya city for two terms, added.
The Rismaharini-Gus Hans pair has the backing of three political parties, namely PDI-P, the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) Party, and the Ummah Party.
Meanwhile, Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Emil Elestianto Dardak, who will also contest the East Java governor-deputy governor seats, have registered their names with the KPU.
The Luluk Nur Hamidah-Lukmanul Hakim pair, supported by the National Awakening Party (PKB), will also register on Thursday. On the last day of registration, the KPU remains open until 11:59 p.m. local time.
Indonesia will hold the 2024 simultaneous Regional Head Election to elect governors and deputy governors, mayors and vice mayors, and district heads and deputy district heads on November 27.
