Jakarta (ANTARA) - The prayer of the faithful was chanted in local languages during the grand holy mass led by Pope Francis at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium on Thursday.

This prayer, part of the Eucharistic celebration, follows the homily or sermon in the Catholic Church.

At the start of the prayer, Pope Francis invited the thousands of Catholics present to seek blessings from Saint Teresa of Calcutta, described as a tireless advocate for the poor and a champion of peace.

Representatives of various ethnic groups, including the Javanese, Torajans, Bataks, Manggarais, Dayaks, and Papuans, took turns chanting prayers in their respective languages.

The congregation prayed for Pope Francis, bishops, and priests to be blessed with the Holy Spirit in their service to the people.

They also prayed for government officials and representatives to be guided by God in their efforts for goodness, justice, and peace.

Additionally, the faithful prayed for the poor, the sick, and those affected by disasters, asking God to ease their suffering.

Prayers were also offered for Indonesian Catholic youth to remain steadfast in their faith and to foster brotherhood and compassion.

The congregation prayed for national harmony and peace.

The prayer of the faithful concluded with a final prayer by the Pope, asking God to hear and grant all the prayers offered during the mass.

This grand holy mass marked the climax of Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia. Earlier, he met with President Widodo at Merdeka Palace, greeted Catholic leaders at Jakarta Cathedral, and participated in an interfaith dialogue at Istiqlal Mosque.

Pope Francis is visiting Indonesia as part of his apostolic journey to the Asia-Pacific, which began on September 3, 2024, and will conclude on September 13. This 12-day visit is the longest of his 11-year papacy.

He is the third Vatican leader to visit Indonesia, following Pope Paul VI in 1970 and Pope John Paul II in 1989.

On Friday, Pope Francis will continue his journey to Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.
