The conference, themed "Driving Sustainability with Digital Innovation," also explored digital transformation in safety, service, and operations, according to a statement from Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) on Friday.
Hosted by the Indonesian state-run railway company, the conference brought together representatives from seven other ASEAN railway operators: Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malaysia), Vietnam Railways, Cambodia's Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Lao National Railways (Laos), Philippine National Railways, Myanma Railways (Myanmar), and State Railway of Thailand.
In his address, Indonesia's Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi highlighted the country's rapid railway development, including the recent launch of the first high-speed train in ASEAN, Whoosh.
The high-speed train, which connects Jakarta and Bandung in just 28 minutes, aims to enhance connectivity and economic growth in the region. It offers three classes, a total capacity of 601 passengers, and dedicated spaces for the disabled.
"Moreover, in urban rail transportation, Indonesia is expanding its MRT network with ongoing construction, in addition to the Jabodebek LRT, and the latest is the autonomous rail transit in Nusantara as the next capital city," he stated.
The conference featured several working group sessions focused on sharing best practices and addressing key challenges in the railway industry. Topics included digital technology implementation, railway human resource development, digital marketing, service transformation, and the application of high-tech railways like high-speed trains.
KAI CEO Didiek Hartantyo emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among ASEAN railway operators to achieve greater accomplishments and realize the region's spirit of mutual benefit, shared success, and resilience.
"This year, our theme is 'Driving Sustainability with Digital Innovation.' We believe this theme stems from the global challenges we face, including the urgent need to address climate change, improve operational efficiency, and meet the growing demand for more sustainable transportation options," he said.
He added that advancements in technology and changes in customer demands play a significant role in shaping his company's focus.
Delegates had the opportunity to experience Whoosh as well as the Panoramic Train, which offers panoramic views along the journey.
During the conference, KAI also deployed electric vehicles, provided eco-friendly souvenirs, and used an app as an information platform to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and digital innovation.
"We believe this conference will not only strengthen cooperation among railway operators but also promote sustainability and digital innovation in the spirit of ASEAN unity. Together, we can build a future where railways connect our nations and support ASEAN's growth and success," Didiek concluded.
