Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, on Monday, inaugurated the newly revitalized Pasar Baru Market in Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands, which will serve as a regional economic hub.

"The Tanjungpinang Pasar Baru Market will strengthen and become the main source of regional income," VP Amin stated at the market's inauguration here on Monday.

The VP remarked that the government is keen to ensure that the local people have access to the market with an orderly and clean environment.

VP Amin noted that Tanjungpinang City has vast potential in the marine products industry and marine tourism.

Hence, he assessed that the Pasar Baru Market is highly strategic as a center for the purchase and sale of fresh seafood, local handicraft items, and food products.

He expressed hope that this market would function as a place to expand businesses and drive the local economy, as well as become a safe and comfortable location for socio-cultural activities.

"With our commitment and hard work, the Tanjungpinang Pasar Baru Market will not only become a local economic center but also a globally competitive economic center," he remarked.

Pasar Baru, located near the sea, is the oldest market in the city. In March 2022, one of the market's buildings collapsed, thereby hindering the trade activities of the community.

In response to this incident, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing and the Tanjungpinang city government conducted renovations to ensure that the market can function again and serve the community's needs.

The market's rehabilitation was conducted from November 2022 to December 2023, with a contract value of Rp79.6 billion, or US$5.1 million.

It currently has three building blocks that can accommodate 785 traders.
