We are adopting the best policies that suit our needs.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) has said that the government is designing artificial intelligence (AI) policies that can benefit the community amid the ongoing global geopolitical dynamics.
"We are adopting the best policies that suit our needs," the ministry's expert staff, Wijaya Kusumawardhana, said during a discussion on "AI: Trend or Necessity?" here on Monday.
He explained that in the current AI development landscape, Western countries such as the United States and the European Union are focusing on data security, which is a fundamental aspect of AI development.
Kusumawardhana highlighted that data security is being pursued to protect the privacy of data owners, noting that Indonesia has Law No. 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection (PDP Law).
Drawing from China's AI development experience, Kusumawardhana emphasized that Indonesia must also focus on involving multiple stakeholders to provide more comprehensive solutions for society.
At the same time, the government has stressed that AI development must comply with Ministerial Circular No. 9 of 2023 concerning AI Ethics.
"Indonesia must seek the best solutions for the nation; what is most important right now is having a guideline. Therefore, there is a guideline on AI ethics aimed at protecting humans," he said.
"The key is not to let AI development neglect the role of humans," he added.
While Indonesia awaits a binding law on AI governance, Kusumawardhana noted that several relevant policies can be used to address AI abuse cases.
These policies include Law No. 1 of 2024 concerning the Second Amendment to Law No. 11 of 2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) and the PDP Law.
