"Provision of low-carbon electricity could be a solution for regional development by building a reliable energy transmission system that is able to receive more renewable electricity while connecting growth centers with renewable energy resources," the ministry's Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure, Ervan Maksum, stated during the 3rd Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) here on Tuesday.
According to Maksum, fair energy transition in the provision of electricity was a complex challenge.
He pointed out that although the national electrification ratio had reached 99.83 percent, the system still relied on fossil fuels and high carbon emissions, considering that the renewable energy mix was only 13.09 percent, far behind Vietnam.
To overcome dependence on fossil energy, there is a dire need for reducing power plants with high emissions and developing a super grid.
In addition, it was necessary to ensure access to quality, affordable, and sustainable energy, as well as encourage efficiency in terms of provision and utilization.
Strengthening connectivity and the transition of electrical energy is said to be the focus of future development. Although it is not easy to implement, a comprehensive and integrated strategy must be implemented.
"ISEW will also support the commitment of local governments, associations, and business actors in decarbonization efforts with support from the central government. Solutions related to funding and regulations that support the energy transition also need to be formulated, including efforts to increase financing for sustainable electrical energy investment to fulfill (the needs of) basic infrastructure and at the same time accelerate energy transition efforts," Ervan remarked.
He expressed hope that the ISEW 2024 forum could explore ideas or concepts to accelerate the achievement of energy transition targets and efforts through collaboration across ministries and agencies, between regions and centers, global partnerships, and public participation in national development planning, especially in the field of electrical energy.
"ISEW 2024 was expected to be a forum to bridge the direction of development planning. The recommendations produced in the ISEW 2024 discussion would be input for the preparation of a more holistic and integrated plan, especially to realize a sustainable electricity energy system by considering the potential of regional resources, which are in line with regional development and national development," he stated.
