Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics has prepared a strategy to counter the spread of hoaxes to ensure that the situation during the simultaneous regional head elections in November 2024 remains peaceful and conducive.

Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said that the strategy was designed by the ministry's Directorate General of Public Information and Communication.

"We also want to create a conducive, democratic, and stately situation during the 2024 regional head election," he added here on Tuesday.

The ministry will implement the strategy in coordination with large digital platforms operating in Indonesia, such as Meta, Google, and TikTok.

The ministry has asked digital platforms to prevent the spread of hoaxes and support the handling of hoaxes during the stages of election implementation.

"The most important thing is we do not want to see any hoaxes, defamation, hate speech, and (data) leaks," he said.

The minister expressed optimism that like in the general elections in February, the government will manage to curb the spread of hoaxes during the upcoming elections.

Setiadi highlighted that the government successfully check the spread of negative content in the digital space during the general elections.

"It declined. You can feel that the 2024 General Elections were more peaceful, right? Even though there were hoaxes and defamation, they declined far compared to five years ago," he said.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics on Monday expressed its commitment to helping the General Election Commission (KPU) realize peaceful regional head elections by tracing and handling content, including deepfakes, that could divide the people.
