Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expected the coverage of the state's employment social security provider, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, to reach workers in villages and remotest areas of the nation.

"Ensure your services are more equitable and inclusive so that the coverage will not only be in major cities but also in the remotest areas," Amin instructed BPJS Ketenagakerjaan executives in his remarks here on Thursday.

With the nation's 142 million workforce in 2024, Indonesia is seeking to expand labor insurance coverage nationwide, including through service digitization and access improvement, he remarked.

According to Amin, such innovation will facilitate the registration of new insurance holders and access to BPJS Ketenagakerjaan's benefits regardless of where the workers are.

The vice president also affirmed that the government strives to ensure that labor insurance covers more "vulnerable" workers, such as farmers and fishermen, street hawkers, and mosque caretakers.

He also highlighted the important role of local authorities at the village level in encouraging more workers to participate in BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.

"Their roles are important in ensuring all workers become part of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to accelerate our efforts to eradicate extreme poverty," Amin remarked.

Earlier, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan's president director, Anggoro Eko Cahyo, reported that the employment social security has covered 39.2 million workers, of which 2.8 million are considered to work in more vulnerable sectors.

He stated that labor insurance plays a key role in damping the decline of the nation's middle class, one of the main hindrances in the mission to achieve the 2045 Golden Indonesia Vision.

"Moreover, since 2023, we have disbursed Rp90 trillion (US$5.85 billion) benefits for 7.3 million workers or their beneficiaries and provided Rp663 billion (US$43.1 billion) educational benefits for 160 thousand children of workers' insurance holders," Cahyo revealed.
