IKN Nusantara, East Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Chief of the National Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Thursday expressed his readiness to probe the alleged misappropriation of funds allocated for the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh-North Sumatra.

"If we find facts and evidence leading to the misappropriation of PON funds, we will prepare our investigators to carry out investigations and inquiries," Prabowo informed.

He made the statement after attending a briefing with President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in national capital city (IKN) Nusantara, East Kalimantan, on Thursday.

He further said that he will promptly coordinate with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, on the matter.

Earlier, deputy director of corruption crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, Senior Commissioner Arief Adiharsa, also conveyed his party's readiness to review Sports Week venues to investigate allegations of financial misappropriation.

"The task force team from the Police Headquarters will go to PON's venues on Friday, among other things, to provide assistance to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and to investigate the reported matter," Adiharsa informed.

He said that the step is being taken following consultations with Minister Ariotedjo regarding the alleged misappropriation.

He informed that the task force consists of a joint team from the Directorate of Corruption Crimes of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, the Aceh Police, and the North Sumatra Police.

Besides reviewing the event, his party will also go through and clarify reports submitted by the Minister of Youth and Sports.

The Aceh-North Sumatra PON is being held from September 9 to 20, 2024, with athletes competing in 65 sports — 33 in Aceh and 34 in North Sumatra.

The Aceh PON will be attended by 6,287 athletes and 3,158 officials, while 6,618 athletes and 3,320 officials will join the competition in North Sumatra.
