Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin inaugurated the first coronary artery bypass surgery (by pass) and neurointervention health services at the Raja Ahmad Tabib Regional Hospital in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands.

The coronary artery bypass surgery is a heart surgery procedure performed to overcome blockages of the coronary arteries.

Meanwhile, neurointervention is a field of medicine focusing on medical treatment of the nervous system, especially the brain and spine.

"I am delighted to see such services are available at this hospital. Usually, similar surgery can only be carried out in Jakarta, Surabaya, or Medan," he noted in his speech on Sunday.

Based on data from the Health Ministry, the stroke mortality rate in Indonesia reached 300 thousand per year, followed by 250 thousand deaths caused by heart diseases.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, 900 thousand patients died from strokes per year and 750 thousand heart patients per year.

Sadikin hopes the heart and nerve surgery services in the hospital can accommodate the patients to no longer seeking treatment outside the region.

"Now we need to fulfill adequate human resources for surgeons at the hospital. Meanwhile, the ministry is ready to support the equipment," he remarked.

Furthermore, Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad thanked the government for the support in health sector development in his region.

"Health needs in the Riau Islands should be concerned with building a sense of belonging in the community, especially for those living in border areas," he stated.

Separately, Interventional Cardiologist at Raja Ahmad Tabib Regional Hospital, Andrew Parlautan, said the hospital has performed heart bypass surgery for two patients.

Both surgeries went well with all patients in stable condition and are being treated in the ICU for further monitoring, he informed.

"Hopefully in the future we can continue to carry out this surgery," he conveyed.

He informed me that the coronary artery bypass surgery service is still collaborating with the Harapan Kita Hospital, while the neurointervention surgery is teaming up with the National Brain Center Hospital (PON) in Jakarta.

"Basically, we can carry out the surgery so patients no longer need to go to Batam or Jakarta," Parlautan remarked.
