Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is preparing several strategies to address the challenges of the global energy transition. This includes continuously modernizing its fleet for optimal operations.

This operational modernization is part of PIS's commitment to meet the fast-evolving demands of the global energy transition.

PIS CEO Yoki Firnandi stated that the fleet modernization plan is essential for fulfilling PIS's responsibility towards national energy needs while also addressing the growing demands of the international market.

"We plan to renew and modernize over 130 ships in the next seven years as part of our operational modernization," Yoki said during a panel discussion at PIS's booth at Gastech 2024 in Texas, USA. The renewal involves not only owned vessels but also chartered ships operated by PIS.

PIS currently serves as the virtual backbone of Indonesia's energy, transporting around 160 billion liters of energy across the country through 20,000 deliveries.

Furthermore, Yoki emphasized that the company is not only focused on fleet renewal but is also actively preparing infrastructure for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS). This effort is reflected in the collaboration between PIS and Nippon Yushen Kabushiki Kaisha Group (NYK), a leading shipping company from Japan.

"At the same time, we must invest to meet energy needs and future demands. For example, our collaboration with NYK in developing CCS transportation in Indonesia," Yoki added.

PIS has also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) for carbon transportation as a manifestation of synergy within the Pertamina Group.

Throughout 2024, PIS has recorded the addition of six new tanker vessels in the first half of the year, including giant gas carriers, as part of the company's efforts to accelerate the energy transition. Not only in terms of fleet, PIS is also actively preparing supporting infrastructure for sustainable business and operations, including green terminals and the development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS/CCUS) business.

PIS's participation in Gastech reflects the company’s commitment to support a secure and sustainable energy future and collaborate with hundreds of industry players, practitioners, and policymakers to address the rapidly changing global energy challenges.
