Speaking at the book fair in Jakarta on Wednesday, the ministry's Deputy for Marketing, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, noted that the fair showcased a wide range of appealing literature, serving as a positive platform to increase Indonesian people's interest in reading.
"We truly need platforms like this to encourage children to engage in learning activities outside of school from an early age," she emphasized.
Marthini stressed the importance of steering children away from excessive screen time and encouraging them to use their free time to read more books.
She expressed her belief that by spending more time with books, children can broaden their perspectives and improve the literacy skills essential for their future.
"By introducing children to books, we can help them gain knowledge and insights," she said. "Otherwise, they will spend all their time on gadgets."
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Publishing Community (IKAPI), Arys Hilman Nugraha, remarked that developing a reading habit can also serve as a means of pursuing education and engaging in social activities.
"Reading is not only tied to academic and economic success but also plays a crucial role in shaping positive personal and social behaviors," he said.
The event, open to the public for free from September 25–29, also features book launches, author meet-and-greets, book signings, talk shows, seminars, and coloring competitions, among other activities.
