Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Thursday visited Vocational Public High School (SMKN) 1 Kalabahi in Alor, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, to inspect educational facilities and meet students.

According to a statement received from his secretariat in Jakarta, Widodo reviewed the quality of several majors offered by the school, such as computer and network engineering and merchant shipping.

The President commended the vocational school for educating young talents using interactive methods.

"I found that students are encouraged to be active. For instance, subjects related to computers and networks are properly taught through a practical method. The school also has practice rooms for the merchant shipping major," he noted.

During his visit, the head of state also emphasized that the government is ready to assist SMKN 1 Kalabahi in making improvements.

After the inspection, the President held a dialogue with pupils on the school field, where he asked them some questions related to Indonesia’s ideology Pancasila.

"My dear children, I would like to remind you to continue learning diligently and working hard, so that you will be able to make your dreams come true," he told the students, who responded with applause.

The Cabinet Secretariat's statement quoted the principal of SMKN 1 Kalabahi, Idalita Laure, as saying that she and her pupils did not expect to have the honor to meet with President Widodo in Alor.

"I felt so touched that I shed tears when I heard about Mr. President Joko Widodo's visit here. Even though Alor is a very small region, barely recognizable on the map, the President chose to come here and visit this school," she remarked.

Laure expressed optimism that the President's visit would encourage students and teachers at her school to continue improving educational quality.

During the school visit, Widodo was accompanied by Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, NTT acting governor Andriko Noto Susanto, and the acting head of Alor district, Zet Sony Tobing.
