In a statement received from his secretariat in Jakarta, the president stated that in general, the prices of staple goods at the traditional market have been stable despite slight differences from the grocery prices on Java Island.
"I have checked the prices of nine essential commodities at the market. I found the prices (to be) good although higher than those in Java, possibly due to additional transportation costs. Nevertheless, I think the prices are at a stable and reasonable level," he remarked.
Jokowi noted that the market offers garlic at Rp55 thousand (US$3.56) per kilogram and shallots and chilies respectively at Rp50 thousand (US$3.24) per kg.
"In my view, these (prices) are still decent," he stated.
In its statement, the Presidential Secretariat explained that the head of state's visit to the people's market serves as his effort to ensure that the government manages to maintain affordable prices of basic goods for all citizens, especially those living in regions that are not distribution centers.
Apart from inspecting prices, Jokowi also made the most of his visit to interact with merchants and learn about the problems they are facing, particularly those related to logistics and transportation.
Both merchants and local residents were also seen eager to welcome the president at the market.
"I am very delighted (with the president's visit). Even though he only came here once throughout his two presidential terms, I am very proud of him for his success in actualizing equitable infrastructure development across Indonesia," Ismail, one of the locals, stated.
Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, NTT Acting Governor Andriko Noto Sutanto, and Acting Head of Alor District Zet Sony Libing accompanied President Jokowi during his visit.
